The background of National Day Kuwait

Kuwait was founded in the early 17th century as a small fishing village with a sparse population. By the end of the 18th century, Kuwait had become an important trading and boat-building centre. The Al-Sabah family seized control of Kuwait in 1756. Kuwait’s National Day commemorates the year 1961, when the country attained independence and Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah of the Al-Sabah family ascended to the throne, marking the country’s independence. In the same year, the British defended the country against an invasion by the Turks.

The origins of Kuwait’s National Day can be traced back to Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salim Al-accession Sabah’s to power in 1950.

Al-Sabah was the first son of Salim Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah and was born in 1895. From the moment he ascended to the throne of Kuwait in 1950, Al-Sabah distinguished himself as an exceptional ruler. Al-Sabah, unlike previous rulers, was determined to end British rule in Kuwait, which he finally did in 1961. Following the signing of a treaty, Kuwait ceased to be a British protectorate. Consequently, he is considered the founder of modern Kuwait. On November 11, 1962, Al-Sabah ratified the Kuwaiti Constitution. Unfortunately, Al-Sabah passed away in 1965 due to a heart attack he suffered during the opening session of the National Assembly.

Kuwait, officially known as the ‘State of Kuwait,’ is a country in Western Asia. It shares land borders with Iraq and Saudi Arabia, as well as an Iranian maritime border. Kuwait is the fifth wealthiest country in the world and has the sixth-largest oil reserves in the world. The Dinar is the most highly valued currency in the entire world.

The National Day of Kuwait is always celebrated with pomp and circumstance. People congregate in parks, restaurants, beaches, and the streets to celebrate the lovely day. On the streets of Kuwait, the national flag is proudly displayed, and embassies, consulates, and permanent missions host official receptions.

The Emir of Kuwait exerts great effort to transform his nation into a major economic port and a thriving democracy. The development plans to promote Kuwait as a global financial and commercial hub have been approved by him. These projects are intended to provide citizens with investment and income opportunities. In addition, the Emir is tirelessly working to foster national unity and solidarity among the people. So far, Kuwait has emerged as a nation that is fair, just, and tolerant. Since its independence, Kuwait has made significant advancements and achieved prosperity.

Typically, the national day of the majority of nations coincides with the date of their independence. It would mean that Kuwait celebrates National Day on June 19, the date of its independence in 1961. In 1962, however, the first National Day holiday was celebrated on this date. Due to the extreme heat in June, the holiday was moved to February, and since 1963, the National Day has been celebrated on February 25 to commemorate sheikh Abdullah Al-Saleh Al-accession Sabah’s to power in 1950.
