National Dieselbilly Day is annually observed on June 29. It celebrates the birth and career of Bill Kirchen, the self-proclaimed “King of Dieselbilly.” Kirchen is credited as one of the originators and pioneers of Americana music. He was the ensemble Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen’s lead guitarist. He devised the term ‘dieselbilly,’ which refers to a tradition of truck-driving songs “from another era when gears still jammed and there were no little black boxes that told tales about the driver.” Kirchen’s career spans more than half a century, and he is still active today.
The background of National Dieselbilly Day
Bill Kirchen was born on June 29, 1948 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and grew up in Ann Arbour, Michigan. Kirchen learnt how to play the trombone during his high school years. Soon after meeting David Siglin, he immersed himself in the local folk scene. As he learned to play the banjo and the guitar, his musical tastes expanded beyond folk music. After enrolling at the University of Michigan, he formed a “psycho folk-rock” ensemble that evolved into a country group. This served as the foundation for his future ensemble.
The country-rock band Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen was founded in 1967 by Kirchen, George Frayne, and John Tichy. The band relocated to California in 1969, where they were considered musical dissidents. Their music has been characterised as “a ‘high-octane mix’ of rock ‘n’ roll, hard-core country, boogie, and rockabilly sounds.” The ensemble finally disbanded in 1976. After Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, Kirchen founded the Moonlighters, a swing orchestra. Kirchen moved to Washington, D.C. around 1986 and founded the band Too Much Fun. The band received numerous accolades for their music, and Kirchen’ guitar skills continued to improve.
Kirchen is credited as one of the Americana movement’s progenitors and forerunners. He devised the term ‘dieselbilly,’ which refers to a tradition of truck-driving songs “from another era when gears still jammed and there were no little black boxes that told tales about the driver.” Kirchen’s career spans more than half a century, and he is still professionally active today.
