National Governance Professionals Day, scheduled for the last Wednesday of March, is an initiative established by Governance Professionals of Canada (GPC) to promote the recognition and success of governance professionals in Canada. National Governance Professionals Day will be celebrated for the first time on March 29, 2023. Governance specialists play a crucial and indispensable role in the success of businesses and organisations by enforcing sound approaches and high-quality governance standards. Governance professionals are highlighted for their significant contribution to the creation and maintenance of stakeholder value in Canada through effective governance.
The background of National Governance Professionals Day
Governance Professionals of Canada (GPC), formerly known as the Canadian Society of Corporate Secretaries (C.S.C.S. ), was founded in 1994, shortly after the Toronto Stock Exchange (T.S.X. )published the “Where Are the Directors?” Dey Report.
Rebranded in 2016 to be more inclusive of the numerous professionals within the governance function, GPC is now Canada’s premier community for governance professionals.
As a member-focused organization, GPC seeks to influence and promote leading governance practices, function as a catalyst in establishing the highest standards in corporate governance in Canada, and promote the recognition and success of Canadian governance professionals.
GPC focuses on those whose duties are typically associated with corporate governance in Canada, such as corporate secretaries, assistant secretaries, governance professionals, corporate counsel, and heads of compliance, risk, legal, and other governance-related functions, with a growing community of over 4,000 like-minded professionals and a membership of approximately 700. Its members focus on all aspects of corporate governance, including board and committee processes, management and structure, disclosure, stakeholder engagement, and legal and corporate compliance, as well as issues vital to boards and their supervision and accountability.
GPC is committed to developing and supporting Canadian governance professionals through high-quality and timely professional development education, valuable industry resources, stimulating networking opportunities, and a unique designation program, the GPC.D. GPC is commemorating the inaugural National Governance Professionals Day to honour and recognise the contributions of all governance professionals in Canada.
