National Hope for Henry Day 2023: History
The Hope for Henry Foundation established National Hope for Henry Day in 2019 with the intention of providing exceptional care to critically ill children in hospitals by granting them access to life-altering experiences and activities that are typically out of their reach.
Henry Strongin Goldberg, age seven, is regarded as a savior in Washington, D.C. due to his optimistic demeanor during the most difficult times of his life. On October 25, 1995, he was born to Allen Goldberg and Laurie Strongin. Fanconi Anemia, an uncommon variant of a genetic disorder, was identified as his condition on November 11, two weeks subsequent to his delivery. Following his diagnosis, Henry began to be confined to the hospital on a regular basis. Despite undergoing multiple therapies to maintain a manageable level of physical fitness, the young boy demonstrated remarkable fortitude in the midst of his hardships. He was consistently upbeat, joyful, and active. Henry did not permit the fact that he had a terminal illness to prevent him from appreciating all that life had to offer young children. He engaged in athletic pursuits and firefly hunting, similar to his peers.
In their quest to find a remedy for their child’s ailment, Henry’s parents were informed that his survival was contingent upon a stem cell transplant. Thus, in 1996, they welcomed a second child with the expectation that he would be a suitable candidate for a transplant with Henry. Regrettably, this did not transpire. The distressing event that occurred in 2002 was Henry’s succumbing to his ailment. His parents established the Hope for Henry Foundation in 2003, deriving motivation from the insights they gained from his positive attitude. To date, this organization has touched the lives of more than 60,000 children across ten institutions. Henry’s mother concluded in 2010 to chronicle her child’s ordeal and released a book titled “Saving A Henry: A Mother’s Journey.” In order to broaden the scope of their foundation, National Hope for Henry Day was established.
