The 20th of May is National Rescue Dog Day, which carries with it the promise of love, friendship, and generosity. Every year, millions of canines are abandoned by their owners and end up on the streets. The Background of National Rescue Dog Day

Lisa Wiehebrink established the National Rescue Dog Day on May 20. She is both an author and the creator of “Tails That Teach.” Many of Wiehebrink’s works focus on the relationship between humans and creatures. Her books, whose intended audience is children, emphasise the importance of compassion, unconditional love, forbearance, and so on. She believes that instilling these qualities in children towards animals will assist them later in life when dealing with humans. In 2009, Wiehebrink conceived of the day after she rescued her dog Cooper and several others.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), a non-profit organisation founded in 1866, reports that more than three million canines enter shelters annually. Many of these canines are also the result of overpopulation due to the lack of spaying and neutering of dogs. When living on the streets, dogs encounter many obstacles. They lack adequate access to sustenance, shelter, and security. In addition, they are subjected to human cruelty in the form of maltreatment by humans and vehicular mutilation. However, once these dogs have been rescued and given care and affection, they are adoptable/fosterable. Especially as service dogs, rescue canines can be exceptional companions, instructors, and aids. In addition, they can offer emotional support to those suffering from mental disorders such as depression, PTSD, anxiety, etc. Additionally, through caring for rescue canines, young children can learn to provide care, love, and affection to other living beings, which is the goal of Wiehebrink’s campaign for this day.
