National Sons Day 2023: Molding our sons into responsible men can be viewed as either a treacherous journey or an opportunity for personal growth. On March 4 and September 28, National Sons Day, we reflect on our sons and the legacy we leave as parents. More than that, we take the time to listen to our boys, learning about their hopes, fears, and ideas for changing the world. Everyone has a role to play. Men and women. Educators. Professionals at all levels.
WHEN IS NATIONAL SONS DAY 2023?
On March 4, sons around the world enjoy the spotlight and are spoiled. National Sons Day is observed on September 28 annually.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL SONS DAY
National Sons Day has taken on new significance as the 21st century enters its third decade. The #metoo era has been long overdue, and society can no longer ignore the significance of raising boys with this in mind. The glad tidings? Finally, a crucial national dialogue has begun.
Parents of sons today are confronted with challenges that seem so obvious, yet no one anticipated them. Who could have predicted that so many of America’s most famous and powerful men would fall so quickly? The names on the list sent shock waves through the entertainment, media, technology, and political communities. And nobody knows where we will go next.
Undoubtedly, it all begins with teaching (and modelling) respect.
In a recent article for Motherly, lifestyle writer (and father) Christopher Dale stated, “Parents of boys are in a precarious position, as the rules of inter-gender engagement appear to be in constant flux. As society justifiably amplifies the voices of accusers, we find ourselves raising the voices of those who may be accused.
defendants and accusers This is too much for our children to handle. How then do parents navigate these perilous waters? There is no simple solution. This is uncharted territory, so this discussion must continue for as long as necessary. Preparing our sons for this will necessitate a level of guidance and communication that our forebears as parents could never have imagined – and that we have yet to fully comprehend.
Men have struggled with the stereotype of displaying strength without fear or compassion. As society incorporates “emotional” equity in the workplace and at home, we are redefining what it means to be a good son and a good man.
Jill Nico founded National Sons Day in 2018. Let’s have meaningful conversations with our boys on this day.
The customs of the day
On National Sons Day, while mothers lavish their sons with affection and prepare their favourite foods, fathers enjoy spending quality time with their sons. Tossing the old pigskin, pulling them out, and imparting sage advice. Sons don’t get verbal or physical approval as often as daughters do, so make sure to let your son or someone who is like a son to you know how proud you are of him.
New customs are being established for future generations. National Son Day is the perfect time to discuss respect and lifestyle choices with your young man. Setting a good example for our sons will shape their futures and help them become exemplary members of society.
