National Train Day is celebrated annually on the Saturday closest to May 10, which is May 13 this year. The holiday was first observed in 2008 and continues to be observed to the present day. Amtrak conceived of the celebrations as a means to educate the public about the history of railway networks in the United States and why more people should utilise this mode of transportation. National Train Day commemorates the installation of the Golden Spike in Promontory, Utah, at the summit of Promontory. The day also commemorates the first anniversary of the United States’ rail route system. To commemorate the occasion, exhibitions of railway layouts and other events are planned.
