Every year, Pinocchio Day is observed on February 23. This day commemorates the 1940 release of the Disney film with the same name. Due to its familiarity as a European folk tale, Disney’s “Pinocchio” went on to become a global phenomenon. It was based on Carlo Collodi’s 1883 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio. The studio’s second animated feature-length film after “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” was Pinocchio. A puppet named Pinocchio attempts to become a human boy in the film.
The background of Pinocchio Day
“The Adventures of Pinocchio” was originally serialised in a weekly magazine beginning on July 7, 1881, under the title “The Story of a Puppet.” In 1883, due to the series’ popularity, all the installments were collected and published as a novel. Since then, Pinocchio’s misadventures have become ingrained in the cultural zeitgeist. The book is currently regarded as a classic of children’s literature. Pinocchio has since been featured in or referenced in numerous works of popular fiction.
“Pinocchio” was the third attempt to adapt the story of the wooden puppet for the silver screen. It was the studio’s second animated feature-length film, following 1937’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” Geppetto, an Italian woodcarver, gives life to the wooden puppet Pinocchio, who is the protagonist of the film. Throughout the film, Pinocchio attempts to become a real boy by demonstrating courage, honesty, and selflessness. During this quest, he encounters many unsavoury characters, guided by Jiminy Cricket. The film explores morality, social conformity, discipline, and maturation.
The film received rave reviews following its release. It won both the Best Original Song and Best Original Score Academy Awards. It is the first time a Disney movie has won in either category. On July 16, 1985, “Pinocchio” was released for home viewing in North America and quickly became the year’s best-selling home video. In 1988, it was released on VHS in the United Kingdom.
