Record Store Day occurs annually on a Saturday in April. This year, the holiday will be observed on April 22. On April 19, 2008, the first Record Store Day was held to commemorate the culture of independently owned record stores across the United States. As the day grew in popularity and recognition, record stores in other nations began commemorating. Today, Record Store Day is observed on all continents with the exception of Antarctica. The purpose of this day is to honour everyone who contributes to the existence of independently owned record stores, including employees, artists, and customers. Each year, it is observed on a distinct date.
The background of Record Store Day
Thomas Edison’s invention of the phonograph in 1877 marked the beginning of the acoustic era of sound recording, marking the beginning of the recording of sounds. During this time period, sound recorders etched analogues of sound waves onto a surface. These devices could only capture a restricted portion of the perceptible sound spectrum. The year 1925 marked the introduction of electrical recording apparatus designed by “Western Electric.” Electronic recording, amplification, filtering, and balancing of a wider array of audible sounds is now possible. This time period was known as the ‘Electric Era.’
The ‘Magnetic Era’ began in 1945, following World War II, when the allied powers gained access to the German magnetic tape recording invention. Slowly adopted, this novel technology eventually led to the development of stereo recording. Eventually, the multitrack tape recording became feasible. The current era of sound recording, known as the “Digital Era,” has witnessed changes and the advancement of technology at an unprecedented rate. Sound waves were recorded for the first time not as analogues of sound, but as discrete samples of sound. Sony and Philips collaborated to create the first compact disc (CDR) to hold recorded audio. CDs dominated the recording industry until the turn of the 21st century. The introduction of digital audio files has rendered audio CDs virtually obsolete.
People today listen to music in numerous methods. Some traditionalists spend a portion of their time collecting vinyl records and cassettes, while others use music streaming applications such as Spotify and Apple Music to listen to music and other audio files.
