The History of Saint Basil’s Day

Saint Basil was born in Caesarea Mazaca, Cappadocia (modern-day Turkey) in 329 AD. He came from a wealthy family and was educated at the finest schools in Constantinople and Athens. In 356 AD, he returned to Cappadocia and devoted himself to a life of prayer and study.

In 358 AD, Saint Basil was ordained a priest. He soon became known for his eloquent sermons and his tireless work for the poor and sick. In 370 AD, he was appointed Bishop of Caesarea Mazaca.

During his time as bishop, Saint Basil worked tirelessly to defend the Orthodox Faith against heresy. He also wrote many important works on theology and spirituality, which are still studied by Christians today.

Saint Basil died in 379 AD. He is revered as a saint by both the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church.

Saint Basil’s Day Traditions

St. Basil’s Day, or the Feast of St. Basil, is celebrated on January 2nd in many Orthodox Christian countries. It is a day to remember St. Basil the Great, one of the most important saints in the Orthodox Church.
