National Spank Out Day is observed annually on April 30. Its purpose is to advocate nonviolent child discipline across the globe. Communities that observe this holiday raise awareness of the negative effects of corporal punishment, particularly on children. In addition, they instruct parents in alternative forms of discipline that do not involve striking or spanking.
The background of National Spank Out Day
The purpose of corporal punishment is to cause the recipient physical anguish. As a form of retribution for wrongdoing, spanking, slapping, and paddling are frequently employed in schools and homes, particularly when dealing with minors. Since ancient times, corporal punishment has been an accepted practise. The Christian book of Proverbs contains a verse advocating corporal punishment of misbehaving children. Numerous historians have offered explanations for this belief, frequently citing a patriarchal society’s desire to maintain power. Egypt, China, Rome, and Greece were among the civilizations that used corporal punishment to maintain discipline in education.
According to studies, children who are subjected to corporal punishment are more likely to exhibit elevated levels of aggression or mental illness, as well as cognitive development and substance misuse issues. Furthermore, no research that has been peer-reviewed has identified any positive effects of corporal punishment on children. In 1979, in recognition of this, Sweden became one of the first nations to prohibit corporal punishment of minors. Since then, more than 70 nations have either outlawed all corporal punishment against minors or committed to doing so.
In 1998, the Centre for Effective Discipline in the United States established Spank Out Day in response to a growing public awareness.
