Supply Chain Professionals Day is observed annually on the third Monday of May, making this year’s Supply Chain Professionals Day on May 16 the day to recognise the efforts supply chain professionals make to deliver everything we need every day. The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (C.S.C.M.P.) introduced its inaugural day in 2018 to recognise the contributions of all the individuals involved in the supply chain who are often overlooked for recognition. This day, Supply Chain Professionals Day, was created to recognise and celebrate the achievements of all supply chain professionals.

The background of Supply Chain Professionals Day

First and foremost, supply chain refers to the conveyance of a product from its origin to the point of consumption. Supply chain specialists refer to any individuals involved in the distribution of a product to its end-user or consumer. Therefore, we may have sophisticated terms such as supply chain and supply chain professionals today, but it is evident that supply chain and such professionals have existed since the beginning of human civilization, when trade began.

Although the term “supply chain” was coined in 1982 by British logistics expert Keith Oliver, the concept extends back to the early 20th century, when the assembly line was being researched and developed in preparation for World War I. As globalisation expanded and the demand for basic materials to manufacture products increased, the significance of supply chain and supply chain professionals grew. To meet such demands, operations management specialists began to specialise in delivery systems and channels, as well as how to expedite and optimise the delivery and supply of such materials.

In the 1990s, operations managers began designating themselves as supply chain professionals or supply chain experts to emphasise their primary expertise. Today, a supply chain professional is any individual involved in the delivery network of any item, in any portion of the entire chain: from the product’s origin to the final user or consumer. These individuals include logistical partners, supply chain managers who plan and organise the flow of products, and warehouse personnel who store and manage inventory.

Thanks to the efforts of these supply chain professionals, our markets are stocked with goods, our industries are operating and producing those goods, and any product can be delivered to our doorsteps anywhere in the world. As a token of appreciation, the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals created Supply Chain Professionals Day in order to recognise the individuals involved in the supply chain and publicise their achievements. On May 21, 2018, the first Supply Chain Professionals Day was observed.
