World Civil Defense Day: Date, History, Facts about Civil Defense

Every year on March 1, World Civil Defense Day, the world focuses on civil protection and preparedness. People must learn how to prevent, prepare for, and manage emergency situations, including accidents and natural disasters. The day recognises the prestige and honour of those in civil protection. It urges more individuals to acquire the safety measures and protection skills they would require in the event of any type of emergency, whether natural or manmade. “We can only hope for the best if we are adequately prepared for the worst,” is a well-known Civil Defense Day quotation. Civil Defense Day is all about bringing attention to the importance of planning ahead.

The background of World Civil Defense Day

International Civil Defense Organization initiated World Civil Defense Day. They carry out its activities annually. The day was created to honour the efforts of national services responsible for disaster prevention. In addition, it raises awareness of the importance of self-protection and preventative measures in the event of accidents or natural disasters. The International Civil Defense Organization, or I.C.D.O., was founded by Surgeon-General George Saint-Paul in 1931 as the Association of Geneva Zones. After witnessing the effects of war on the populace, Saint Paul desired to establish refuges for civilians during times of conflict. Civil defence, also known as civil protection, is all about protecting citizens from natural disasters by educating them in prevention, preparation, response, evacuation, and recovery techniques.

The association’s name and objectives evolved over time to form the International Civil Defense Organization that exists today. I.C.D.O. is an intergovernmental organisation that protects lives, property, and the environment from natural and man-made disasters. The current I.C.D.O constitution was approved by the organization’s member states in 1972, and it went into effect on March 1 of the same year.

Each year, the I.C.D.O. selects a theme to guide World Civil Defense Day activities. In 2019, the slogan was “Children’s safety, our duty.” The theme for 2022 is “Unifying the world’s foremost industry experts for the safety and security of future generations.”
