World Environment Day encourages everyone to preserve the natural environment. The astounding truth? An estimated 7 million people perish annually from air pollution-related causes, with the majority residing in the Asia-Pacific region. This day, which occurs on June 5, promotes global activism. That includes everything from littering to global warming. World Environment Day is both a worldwide commemoration and a public outreach opportunity.
China, which now possesses fifty percent of the world’s electric vehicles and ninety-nine percent of its electric buses, hosted the 2019 event. Joyce Msuya, the acting head of UN Environment, remarked, “The country has shown tremendous leadership in combating domestic air pollution.” “It can now help spur the world to greater action.” In 1972, the United Nations first instituted World Environment Day.
The background of World Environment Day
Due to its rich history and numerous firsts, World Environment Day (WED) is one of the most unique and significant holidays. It was created on the first day of the first-ever United Nations conference on human interaction with the environment.
Nevertheless, this did not occur overnight. Sweden first proposed such a conference to the United Nations in 1968. And in 1969, the United Nations agreed to hold a conference on environmental issues in Sweden three years later. Maurice Strong, a Canadian diplomat who worked in the oil and mineral industry and had a soft place for the environment, presided over the conference.
In 1972, after four years of preparation and $30,000,000, everything came together. The World Environment Day (WED) was created when world leaders gathered to discuss how they can raise environmental awareness. Two years later, the inaugural WED was commemorated with the slogan “Only One Earth.”
Since then, WED has been universally embraced, to the point where it’s even beginning to seep into popular culture (which we adore)! Celebrities from all over the world encourage people to “save the world” in their own unique ways. Fan-favorites Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep are among the many individuals who continually advocate for environmental consciousness. So, it doesn’t matter if you’re a famous actor, an athlete, or a college student: assemble your friends and spend a day outdoors engaging in enjoyable activities that contribute to the preservation of our planet. Trust us when we say you’ll have a great time and feel so much better afterwards.
