World Piano Day is observed on the 88th day of the year, which corresponds to the number of piano keys. This year’s event occurs on March 29. World Piano Day was founded by a group of like-minded individuals who desired to create a platform for piano-related initiatives in order to promote the growth of music and spread the joy of playing the piano.
The background of World Piano Day
Why is a World Piano Day necessary? “For numerous reasons. “But mostly, because it doesn’t hurt to celebrate the piano and everything surrounding it: performers, composers, piano builders, tuners, movers, and most importantly, the listener,” said German pianist and composer Nils Frahm, who initiated World Piano Day in 2015. The goal was to commemorate the piano across the globe through events, performances, masterclasses, lectures, and so on. Since its inception, World Piano Day has attracted pianists, promoters, organizers, distributors, technicians, piano enthusiasts, and essentially anyone else associated with the instrument.
Hammered dulcimers were the first string instruments used in Europe after the Middle Ages. During the 17th century, the clavichord and harpsichord’s mechanisms were devised after several failed attempts to create stringed keyboard instruments.
From 1790 to 1860, as the piano of the Mozart era underwent modifications, the modern structure of the instrument emerged. These modifications were the result of composers’ and pianists’ desire for more robust and sustained tones. The modern piano’s tonal range has expanded from five to seven octaves over the course of history.
World Piano Day is a commemoration of the piano and all related aspects. This day honours the music of the past and encourages its development. On this 88th day of the year, we gather to honour one of the finest instruments of all time, as well as all those who make this day possible.
