World TB-303 Appreciation Day is appropriately observed annually on March 30. Although it sounds like an automobile, the TB-303 is not a vehicle. Or an illness. Moreover, this is not a “Star Wars” character. It’s even greater! The now-legendary Roland TB-303 bass synthesiser was instrumental in the evolution of the electronic music we know and adore. The background of World Tb-303 Appreciation day
The Roland TB-303 Bass Line, also known as the 303 or the Transistor Bass-303, is a bass synthesiser manufactured by Roland Corporation and designed by Tadao Kikumoto, who was also responsible for the Roland TR-909 drum machine. It was advertised as an automated bass generator.
Kikumoto desired to construct a device that could reproduce the sound of an electric bass guitar for solo musicians to practise with and even perform with. Unfortunately, it was deemed a failure and production ceased shortly thereafter. As a result of the discontinuation, these machines became much more affordable, and many aspiring electronic music producers who desired to experiment with new sounds acquired them. It was acquired by the Chicago-based acid house music group Phuture, who experimented with the synthesiser and began creating music that had never been heard before. They released the now-classic, genre-defining track “Acid Tracks,” which is credited with devising and defining the genre. The DJ was the first to play the melody. Ron Hardy performed in a Chicago nightclub, and it’s fair to say he blew everyone away.
After its heyday in the ’80s, artists continued to challenge the sound in the ’90s by adding rougher edges to their compositions to create alien-like noises, eventually transforming it into the Acid House genre of techno music.
Today, the original 303 costs over one thousand pounds. Roland continues to reimagine its technology, issuing the TB-3 Touch Bassline synthesiser in 2014 despite the machine’s continued success. The 303 has become a staple for DJs around the globe because it is portable and, well, that’s what the people want!
