World Thinking Day, observed on February 22, is a day of sisterhood, empowerment, and friendship during which Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from around the world speak out on issues affecting girls and young women. Did you know this event raises money for 10 million Girl Guides and Girl Scouts worldwide? Our World, Our Equal Future: The Environment and Gender Equality is the theme for World Thinking Day 2022.
The background of World Thinking Day
Since 1926, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), the Girl Scouts of the United States, and other WAGGGS member organisations have observed World Thinking Day. This is a day to celebrate being a member of the diverse sisterhood around the world. World Thinking Day’s history is a fascinating tale.
In 1926, delegates from around the globe gathered at Camp Edith Macy, which is now known as the Edith Macy Conference Center, in New York for the 4th World Conference and decided to create a day for girl guides and girl scouts. As the Thinking Day, they chose the birthday of Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the scout and guide movement, and his wife Olave.
Later in 1932, a Belgian delegate suggested that girls could raise funds for the organisation, World Thinking Day Fund, to show their appreciation. Accepting this suggestion, Lord Baden-Powell wrote a letter to all guides and girl scouts in the world requesting a penny donation, as a penny could buy a loaf of bread back then.
The Thinking Day was renamed “World Thinking Day” in 1999 during the Dubai Conference. Today, this is a massive global event that encourages members of the movement to consider broader issues.
“Our World, Our Equal Future: The Environment and Gender Equality” is the theme for World Thinking Day in 2022. Due to the ongoing pandemic, WAGGGS is providing a free World Thinking Day live session hosted by WAGGGS world centres that allows girl guides and girl scouts from around the world to connect.
