World Wish Day is observed annually on April 29. This national holiday is sponsored by the “Make-A-Wish Foundation” — an organisation whose mission is to grant the desires of terminally ill children. It is a holiday that even young children enjoy commemorating because it primarily involves them. Although not all wishes are granted or can be granted, you will be astonished to learn that the foundation has granted over 500,000 wishes since its inception several decades ago, and many more will be granted in the future.
The background of World Wish Day
It is nearly impossible to discover a person who has no desires. Everyone has consciously or subconsciously desired something in the past. The act of wishing is not restricted to a specific age group, as everyone desires for something. Children desire something as well. Just as individuals’ preferences vary, so do their desires.
The first World Wish Day was observed on April 29, 2010. In 1980, the moving tale of a young leukaemia patient inspired this holiday. Christopher James Greicius, a seven-year-old child with an abundance of spirit, was battling blood cancer. Despite his illness, Greicius’ one desire was to become a police officer. He had no idea that the Arizona Police had gotten wind of his desire and decided to grant it. On April 29, 1980, the boy’s wish was granted, and he became the only honorary D.P.S. officer in the state of Arizona! Greicius’s smiles and happiness at that event were ineffable. Thus, the “Make-A-Wish Foundation” came into existence as a result of the formation of a group whose mission is to grant children’s desires.
The first observance of World Wish Day commemorated the 30th anniversary of the day Greicius’s lifelong wish was granted, and since then, the foundation has granted numerous surprising and equally fulfilling wishes. Alone in 2010, 198 thousand wishes were granted. The foundation granted one of Kushi Chirag’s daring desires by transforming her into a make-believe princess.
