The programme is based on James Runcie’s collection of short stories titled The Grantchester Mysteries. Since its debut in 2014, the series has become one of the most popular forensic dramas on British television. It is produced by Kudos Film and Television exclusively for ITV.

The programme is set in the 1950s and follows Reverend Sidney as he investigates crimes while facing moral dilemmas. He is assisted by Detective Inspector Geordie Keating, whose approach to investigating crimes is more pragmatic. Together, they investigate both criminal cases and the town’s hidden mysteries.

Al Weaver portrays Sidney’s curate, Leonard Finch, while Tessa Peake-Jones plays Mrs. Maguire, Kacey Ainsworth plays Cathy Keating, and Robson Green plays Geordie Keating. Daisy Coulam and Euros Lyn pen and direct the series, respectively.

The programme has received praise for its witty dialogue, strong performances, and portrayal of England in the 1950s. It is a captivating drama with both flawed and endearing characters. Despite the gloomy topics it explores, Grantchester frequently includes humorous moments from ordinary life.

The seventh season of the programme was commissioned in July 2021 and production commenced the following summer. Brittney, who was directing for the first time, was the director. The series debuted on March 11, 2022, and concluded on April 15, 2022. ITV announced in August 2022 that Al Weaver would direct Grantchester season 8 for the first episode.
