Today, on New Year’s Day, people think back on the past year and what they did well and what they could have done better. For the same reason, many people look forward to the new year and make plans to improve themselves.

How is the new year celebrated in India?

In every part of India, people wear bright clothes and do fun things like singing, playing games, dancing, and going to parties. There are people of all ages in nightclubs, movie theatres, motels, restaurants, and entertainment parks. People say hello and wish each other a happy new year.

A lot of the big TV networks show and talk about New Year’s events. People who don’t usually go out to party like to spend New Year’s Eve at home with their families watching these shows. Making goals for the coming year is an important part of the events in India. Some of these are working harder, making good habits, giving up bad ones, dropping weight, and so on.

Cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi, and Mumbai, which are all big in the country, host a lot of live events. A lot of famous people, like Bollywood stars, go to these events and show off their skills. On New Year’s Eve, there are also a number of award shows that are shown on big TV networks.

In Mesopotamia in 2000 BCE, the first known New Year celebration took place. The new year, called Akitu, started with the new moon closest to the fall equinox (mid-September) and the new moon after the spring equinox (mid-March). It was the autumn equinox on September 21 in Egypt, Phoenicia, and Persia. In early Greece, it was the winter solstice on December 21. In ancient Rome, the year began on March 1, but after 153 BCE, it became January 1. This was also the case with the Julian calendar that came out in 46 BCE.

In the early Middle Ages, most Christians in Europe thought of March 25 as the start of the new year because it was the Feast of the Annunciation. In Anglo-Saxon England, on the other hand, New Year’s Day was celebrated on December 25. When the Roman Catholic Church switched to the Gregorian calendar in 1582, January 1 was once again celebrated as New Year’s Day. Over time, most European countries did the same.

People in China enjoy the New Year when the first new moon is between January 21 and February 20. Other Asian societies celebrate the day at different times of the year. For example, the Tamil people in southern India celebrate at the winter solstice, the Tibetans celebrate in February, the Thai celebrate in March or April, and the Japanese celebrate over three days in January.

Many of the traditions of New Year celebrations reflect on how time goes by with both sadness and hope. In ancient Greece, a new year was marked by a baby; an old man by an old man. Romans named January after Janus, who had two faces, one forward and one backward.

Many celebrations include symbolic foods. The South of the United States believes that black-eyed peas bring good luck, while Europe believes that cabbage and other greens bring wealth.

People all over Asia eat special foods like dumplings, noodles, and rice cakes. More complicated recipes use items whose names or looks represent wealth, happiness, longevity, and good luck.

The first of January marks the beginning of a new year after a time of remembering the old year that begins in early December in many countries around the world on radio, TV, and in newspapers. There are stories at the end of the year that look back at how things changed over the past year.
