This was celebrated annually in ancient Rome; it was known as a pastoral festival and its purpose was to cleanse the city and promote health and fertility.

On these, people sacrifice goats and dogs, and then they whip the blood with the hides of newly-slain animals. Noel Lenski, a professor at Yale University, states that the Roman romantics were inebriated and naked, and the men would beat the young women who lined up for it.

They did this because they believed it would increase their fertility. This was their scepticism. Men would draw the chits of women’s names from a jar to play a matchmaking lottery on this board. People believe that they will become a couple during the festival or for a longer period if their names are correctly matched.
