Sindhudurg Airport update: Sindhudurg Airport, also called Chipi Airport, is a domestic airport. It serves the city of Sindhudurg, Maharastra. The airport is situated at Chipi-Parule in Vengurla taluka and 31 km away from Sindhudurg.
Name
The Sindhudurg Airport got its name from the place where it is situated. It is located in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. In While “Sindhudurg” is a combination of two words – “Sindhu” and “Durg”, it refers to the Sindhu River (called the Indus River). It should be mentioned that this river is important to India’s history and culture.
Meaning
In Marathi language,”Durg” means “fort”. Sindhudurg district is famous for its historical fort, Sindhudurg Fort, which was built when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ruled the Marathas.
The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) decided to construct an airport in Sindhudurg and selected the village of Parule near Malvan. The Maharashtra gave the approval for the project. However, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) was also involved in the planning and building.
The construction of Sindhudurg started in 2011. The airport was constructed on a Greenfield site, which means that it was built from start and not added to an existing airport. The project involved buying land, building a runway, a terminal building, putting up navigational aids and putting in other necessary equipment.
Since its inception, the airport has been operating and there have been regular flights between Sindhudurg and other cities in the country. It has boosted tourism in the area, bringing in both vacationers and business visitors.
The airport, the first of its kind in the south Konkan region, was constructed at the cost of Rs 800 crore, The airport iswhich is aimed at enhancing air connectivity between western Maharashtra and the southern states.
Future
In future, the airport will improve its facilities bigger so it can operate bigger planes and increase its capacity so it can handle more passengers.
