Sweetheart Abbey Dumfries, Scotland’s only working nunnery, is a stunningly tranquil place. Nestled in the rolling hills of the Dumfries and Galloway region, the abbey offers an interesting glimpse into Scottish history.


Sweetheart Abbey is a historic convent in Dumfries, Scotland. It is situated on the outskirts of the town, close to the A82 road. The abbey was founded in 1292 by Margaret de Murville, wife of William Wallace. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1326, but was rebuilt in a style inspired by the Cistercian order. It was again destroyed by fire in 1566, and not rebuilt until 1827-9. Today it houses a convent school and a convent museum.

Sweetheart Abbey Dumfries is a historic former nunnery in Dumfries, Scotland. It was founded in 1786 by the Romantic poet and philosopher, Mary Shelley, as a home for unmarried mothers and their children. The abbey closed in 1988. In 1995 it became the Dumfries Museum and Art Gallery.
