Fashion Revolutionary Day occurs annually on April 24. On this day, individuals collaborate to shape the future of the fashion industry. This is accomplished by directing campaigns and utilising our social media influence to contact our preferred fashion brands. It may appear to be a straightforward question, but it promotes transparency in the fashion industry and encourages a discussion that aids in the reform of unsustainable practises. The first Fashion Revolution Day was held on April 24, 2014, and since then, the movement has led to reforms in the fashion industry in nearly a hundred countries around the world.
The background of Fashion Revolutionary Day
It required a catastrophe of epic proportions for us to unite as a global community and create a more ethical fashion industry, thereby giving rise to the fashion revolution. On April 24, 2013, an eight-story garment factory building known as Rana Plaza collapsed in Dhaka, Bangladesh, resulting in over 1,300 fatalities of men, women, and children, over 2,500 injuries, and the orphaning of at least 800 children. This tragic event will be remembered as one of the worst catastrophes in the history of industrial design and fashion.
The public did not scrutinise the fashion industry’s lack of transparency over time. The supply chain is quite complex and ambiguous, and millions of workers are exploited and forced to work inhumane hours for inadequate wages under deplorable conditions. As we witnessed each limp corpse being carried out of the rubble after the disaster, it jolted us to the core, awoke us to the existence of the fast fashion industry, and brought to light the deplorable working conditions of many in the textile and garment industry.
Fashion Revolution Day has been observed for nine consecutive years. With the hashtag #WhoMadeMyClothes, people from all over the world were encouraged to ask fashion and clothing labels, “Who made my clothes?” Today, campaigns are conducted all over the world to raise awareness of the problems in the fashion industry and to promote systemic change and a more sustainable fashion future.
