The Story of Bhai Dooj

Yama and Yamuna were brothers and sisters, according to folklore. For several years, Yamuna pleaded with his brother to visit and bring him food, but Yama never came. But on the second day of the Kartik month of Shukla Paksha, many years later, Yama went to see his sister. When Yamuna saw him in the doorway, she was both astonished and happy. She extended an invitation to him and gave him a warm welcome. She prepared and served him a delectable supper. With this gracious reception, Yama was overjoyed and asked her to seek her blessing.

On this day every year, her Yamuna asked that her sisters had the chance to meet their brothers. Brother Yama found it satisfying to say “Tasatz” after receiving his sister’s benediction.
Sisters present their brothers with tikas and presents like clothing and candy on this day. By giving their sisters gifts, brothers can also express their affection for and love for them. People pay special homage to Yama and Yamuna on this day.
