Michael and All the Angels Day 2023 History
When Michaelmas was changed from a pagan spring festival to a Christian feast day in the third century, its origins could be found all the way back there. Although it was a frequently observed religious event, it wasn’t until the fifth century that it was recognised as a feast day.
At this time, the St. Michael basilica outside of Rome had its official dedication. Then, in the eleventh century, English law mandated that Christians fast for three days prior to the start of this feast. It remained a Holy Day of Obligation throughout the Middle Ages, and landowners would choose reeves for the upcoming year from among the peasants during this time.
These reeves’ primary responsibility was to keep an eye on the peasants and ensure that everyone was doing their part. The reeve’s other duty at this time was to gather rent payments for the landowners.
This custom, together with the belief that this day was a Holy Day of Obligation, persisted throughout the Middle Ages. By the end of the 18th century, both practises, however, both came to a stop.
Celebrations, Traditions, And Customs
There are various customs that surround Michaelmas, and the most of them centre on the customary goose. This is due to the fact that on this day, a goose was customarily given as rent to landowners.
According to several of these customs, those who ate a goose on this day would be rid of all financial troubles the rest of the year, while those who didn’t were thought to experience financial difficulties the entire year.
Consuming pastries with blackberries is another tradition that is popular on this holiday. This custom has its roots in the myth about Lucifer being expelled from heaven.
When Lucifer was cast out of heaven in this tale, he fell into a blackberry bush. As a result, every year Lucifer spits on the blackberry bush, and if they aren’t picked by this day, they go rotten.
On this day, eating ginger is usual in Italy, where many people also make ginger ale, ginger snap biscuits, and ginger caramels. The practise of gathering Michaelmas daisies, which are frequently utilised as home décor or incorporated into clothing, is widespread in most nations.
