Each year, Cinco de Marcho is observed on March 5, twelve days before St. Patrick’s Day. A play on the name of the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo, this fictitious holiday prepares your liver for the excessive drinking on St. Patrick’s Day. In order to ease into the demands of St. Patrick’s Day, this day is widely celebrated by individuals who are not regular or heavy drinkers. Even though Cinco de Mayo is a drinking holiday, it is prudent to drink responsibly and in moderation.
The background of Cinco de Marcho
Cinco de Mayo is an invented holiday with humorous origins. It was created by a man with the alias “Carlos Fantastico,” whose true identity remains unknown. Some believe that his name is a play on “Caro Fantastico,” the Spanish equivalent of the 1980s television classic “Knight Rider.”
In 2007, while enjoying a margarita at the Mexican restaurant The Matador, Fantastico happened to notice the date. The date was March 5th. A thought entered his mind. He was enjoying a Mexican drink in a Mexican restaurant, but the decor was green and St. Patrick’s Day was less than two weeks away. He envisioned a holiday that would celebrate the best of both cultures, and thus the idea for Cinco de Marcho was born: a holiday with a Mexican name that celebrates the drunken revelry of St. Patrick’s Day.
Contrary to popular belief, drinking excessively is not associated with Cinco de March. Fantastico considers life to be a celebration of discovering one’s limits. He sees Cinco de Mayo as a sort of training for light drinkers. Those with a low alcohol tolerance can begin to increase it on Cinco de Mayo in order to prepare their livers for upcoming holiday parties. Numerous celebrants also use the day as a period of general holiday preparation.
Fantastico has always been fascinated by how the United States adds a unique twist to every holiday. This is his way of acting similarly.
