These courageous volunteers became known as “donut lassies” later on. They would even use combat helmets to fry seven donuts simultaneously.

National Donut Day was established in 1938 as a means to honour the Salvation Army members who assisted soldiers during World War I. National Donut Day is now commonly observed on the first Friday of June.
