National Wine Day is celebrated annually on February 18, so prepare to unwind with a couple of glasses of your favourite Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay. Since its creation around 7000 B.C., wine has been a mainstay of human society. Some ancient tribes were so fond of wine that they almost worshipped it. Today, hundreds of varieties of wine are produced all over the world, so the selection is virtually limitless.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL DRINK WINE DAY

Although it is known that humans have been making wine for thousands of years, it is unknown who initially fermented grapes into the liquid we now name wine. Although evidence of ancient wine making has been unearthed throughout China, the Middle East, and Greece, it appears that a number of societies developed the method simultaneously. Around 4,000 years ago, the earliest known winery was discovered in a cave in Armenia; the vintners there employed a vine still used to make wine today!

Ancient Egyptian pharaohs’ tombs were discovered to contain wine barrels, and the Ancient Greeks employed wine in secret sacred ceremonies. Although wine has existed in a variety of forms throughout history, the production method has altered relatively little in the aeons since its creation. The crushed, squeezed, and fermented grape juice is then bottled in barrels. After the mixture has been matured, it is bottled.

There are an unlimited number of wines that can be developed using these simple methods, and different regions of the world are renowned for their particular vintages. Soil, temperature, and weather all influence the growth of wine grapes, making each batch distinctive. Two bottles of the same wine from the same vineyard may taste entirely different depending on the year of production, and as a result, certain vintages are highly coveted. Utilize National Drink Wine Day to sample a new bottle, and relax in the knowing that you’re partaking in a centuries-old custom.
