National Sandwich Day 2023: One of our best holidays is National Sandwich Day, which is held every year on November 3. People think that the sandwich is named after John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, because it is said that he made the first sandwich. Today is a great day to eat a sandwich, which is one of the most famous lunch foods in the United States.
Sunday, November 3, is National Sandwich Day. This is the day for the most useful snack of all time.
HOW NATIONAL SANDWICH DAY CAME TO BE
Even though people have been eating bread with cheese and meat on it for years, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, is thought to have invented it and given it its name. In 1762, the earl, who liked to gamble, asked his cook to make him a meal that wouldn’t need forks or spoons and wouldn’t get in the way of his 24-hour gambling run. He got sliced meat between two pieces of toast from the cook. This gave the earl one hand to keep playing his game.
Of course, neither the earl nor the cook came up with the idea for the sandwich. It is said that before the event in question, Mantagu traveled to the Eastern Mediterranean and saw how the Greeks and Turks offered sandwiches with their starters. He then told his cook to copy their methods to make things easier for him. After a few years, during the Revolutionary War, sandwiches were a common English meal. They didn’t come to America, though, until 1815, when they were added to an American recipe.
During a train worker strike in the 1930s, the New Orlean’s Po’ Boy really took off. Two brothers who used to work on streetcars owned a sandwich shop and offered to feed any worker on strike for free. Workers who came into the shop hungry were greeted with “Here comes another po’ boy,” which later became the name of the sandwich. The first time Reuben showed up was in Omaha, Nebraska. This place was named for a poker player who played there every week in a hotel. The hotel owner put the sandwich on the dinner menu, and it later won a cooking contest across the country.
