World Bartender Day is observed annually on February 24 throughout the world. In the hospitality industry, bartenders are indispensable. We cannot imagine a pub, bar, or nightclub without a bartender in the present day. They keep patrons supplied with beverages, particularly alcoholic ones, and ensure that everyone is enjoying themselves. If you are unsure of what to order or want to try something new, you are more likely to ask a bartender for assistance. Who knows, maybe you’ll find your next favourite beverage this way! Don’t forget to thank the bartender the next time you and your friends enjoy a fun night out.
The background of World Bartender Day
It may appear that bartending is a modern occupation, but it is actually one of the oldest professions known to man; the first bartending job was likely held in the 1400s. It is believed to have originated in various locations such as Rome, Greece, and Asia several thousand years ago. Innkeepers and owners of alehouses who made their own brews and liquors to serve customers would have been bartenders at the time.
Not until the 1800s did the general public develop a somewhat positive view of bartending and cease morally and ethically judging bartenders. At this time, Jerry Thomas, the “father of bartending,” became well-known for the unique cocktails he created in his New York City bars. Thomas was the first to publish a book on bartending in 1862, entitled The Bar-Guide, Tender’s also known as How to Mix Drinks.
Since then, the bartending profession has gained more respect for the creativity, skill, and attention to detail required to create, mix, and serve drinks — often to unruly customers. Since the 1920s and early 1930s, when the United States was in the midst of prohibition, bartenders have returned to the forefront of the hospitality industry, and one cannot imagine a bar or restaurant without them. World Bartender Day honours the inventiveness and abilities of bartenders around the world. The day may have originated during The Perfect Blend, a cocktail competition held in Australia and New Zealand.
