Read on to find out how happiness occurs and how you can make it occur on Happiness Happens Day, August 8. Happiness is what people desire most in existence. If we are not actively seeking it, we are either discussing it, spreading it, daydreaming about it, or, presumably, experiencing it. Happiness is an objective for many. Then there are those who always appear to be content. How do they manage? Do they possess it innately or do they practise it?
The background of Happiness Happens Day
The Secret Society of Happy People, founded in 1998 by Pamela Gail Johnson, was originally a’secret’ society that allowed members to discuss everything that made them happy because they were genuinely happy people, but they did so in secret so that Debbie Downers wouldn’t ruin their day. This inspired their slogan, “Are you happier than you realise?”
In 1999, they created Admit You’re Happy Day, which evolved into Happiness Happens Day. The month of August was designated as Happiness Happens Month in 2000 because, well, why limit a commemoration of happiness to a single day? An annual theme is selected for Happiness Happens Month. In 2019, they encouraged everyone to recognise smile-inducing individuals, also known as “Smile Starters.”
The Society provides numerous tools and resources to promote personal, professional, and community satisfaction. For instance, they designed a Happiness Counter to assist you in recognising daily happy moments that are often neglected. It enumerates 31 ‘types’ of happiness that people frequently sense or experience. At the conclusion of each day, you can reflect on the number of happy moments you experienced and realise you had more than you acknowledged and embraced.
Over the years, an increasing number of individuals have discussed happiness — how to become happy, be happy, discover happiness, and spread happiness. Thus, the Society’s popularity expanded to the point where they no longer required secrecy! In 2019, the group’s name was shortened to Society of Happy People.
HAPPINESS HAPPENS DAY CELEBRATIONS
Be a source of mirth
Write a handwritten letter, make a phone call, send flowers, or bake pastries to bring smiles to the faces of others. There are an infinite number of ways to convey joy to others, but be sure to mention that today is Happiness Happens Day and that they can make it happen by passing it on!
Seek out someone to commend or thank them for a task well done. When we express our appreciation or admiration for others, we exponentially increase their pleasure as well as our own.
Create a list
Create a list of the things that make you joyful and those that bring you down. Knowing the zappers may enable you to avoid them or, at the very least, to be better prepared to deal with them. In addition, when you recognise happiness zappers for what they are, you can more quickly reframe your mindset and shift your focus to the list of things that make you happy.
5 INCREDIBLE WAYS TO CHOOSE JOY
It is consistently and strongly correlated with sentiments of happiness that expressing gratitude promotes an optimistic outlook on life.
It has been demonstrated that helping others reduces feelings of despondency and boosts optimism and self-worth.
Giving is another action that leads to pleasure and benefits the giver as much as, if not more than, the recipient.
Lifting others up has a reciprocal effect; if you emit positive thoughts and emotions, you will likely receive the same in return.
Spend some time looking at old photographs, flipping through high school yearbooks, or reading old letters, and you will experience an abundance of pleasure as you take a trip down memory lane.
