International Yoga Day on June 21 honours the physical and spiritual prowess that yoga has brought to the global stage. While it is an essential source of exercise and healthful activity, millions of people engage in it daily. For many, these practises are a centuries-old means of integrating the body, mind, and spirit.
The background of International Yoga Day
People around the world are preparing to roll out their yoga mats and begin exercising in honour of International Yoga Day, but they may be unaware that yoga dates back centuries.
Yoga is believed to have originated in India approximately 5,000 years ago. Yoga was devised as a means of connecting the mind, body, and soul in order to approach enlightenment. As the practise gained popularity in the West, it was promoted as a form of exercise and relaxation, with claims that it improves the body’s overall health and alleviates physical injuries and chronic pain.
International Yoga Day was first proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 27, 2014, during his address to the United Nations General Assembly, where India’s Ambassador, Asoke Kumar Mukerji, introduced a resolution to establish June 21 as International Yoga Day.
The date of June 21 was chosen because it is the Summer Solstice, the day of the year when there is the most sunlight. The resolution was supported by 177 nations, the largest number of co-sponsors for any United Nations resolution, and declared June 21 as International Yoga Day.
On June 21, 2015, nearly 36,000 people, including Prime Minister Modi and many other prominent political figures from around the world, performed 21 asanas (yoga postures) for 35 minutes in New Delhi as part of the inaugural International Yoga Day, which has since been celebrated around the world.
