National D.R.E.S.S. Syndrome Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

When the immune system of a human reacts negatively to a medication, the body exhibits a variety of reactions, which are frequently severe. This effect is the basis of the D.R.E.S.S. syndrome, and medical professionals consider it to be potentially fatal due to its severity.

National D.R.E.S.S. Syndrome Day, conducted annually on July 16, focuses on D.R.E.S.S. Syndrome, also known as drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome or drug hypersensitivity syndrome. D.R.E.S.S. — abbreviation for ‘drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms’ — is a form of drug hypersensitivity that causes extremely adverse drug reactions in some individuals. This day was founded on the premise that more patients, physicians, researchers, and others will be able to honour and celebrate those lost to this illness because of this special day. There is also the benefit of educating the general public about this disease in order to facilitate quicker and more effective treatment.

The background of National D.R.E.S.S. Syndrome Day

When the immune system of a human reacts negatively to a medication, the body exhibits a variety of reactions, which are frequently severe. This effect is the basis of the D.R.E.S.S. syndrome, and medical professionals consider it to be potentially fatal due to its severity. In comparison to other diseases, knowledge of this syndrome has also been reported very late, and research is still deficient.

In the 1930s, the first cases of ‘hypersensitivity to medications’ were reported. Some patients were administered anticonvulsant drugs, which are intended to prevent seizures or halt an ongoing episode, and the administration of these drugs caused some adverse reactions. In the 1940s, when a few patients were administered a new substance to treat swollen lymph nodes, the same reaction was observed. When the new drug was combined with an anticonvulsant, patients developed rashes, fever, and other adverse reactions. Medical personnel coined the term anticonvulsant hypersensitivity syndrome for this hypersensitivity after concluding that only anticonvulsants can cause it.

Eventually, however, physicians observed that numerous other drugs, not just anticonvulsants, also induced adverse reactions, and the term was subsequently revised. This time, they referred to it as ‘drug-induced hypersensitivity’ or ‘hypersensitivity syndrome’ Subsequently, the nomenclature changed depending on the drug involved, becoming ‘allopurinol hypersensitivity syndrome,”sulfone syndrome,’ etc. The current term, D.R.E.S.S., was not coined until the late 1990s, after a group of researchers observed the clinical medication reactions of 24 patients. To prevent confusion when diagnosing patients, they determined on a common name for this hypersensitivity.

Research on this disease has been sporadic due to its rarity; few individuals contract it, and fewer report having it. Recent research on this disease has been inconsistent and infrequent, which is likely why a special day was created to raise awareness and encourage more research on this illness.

Discover D.R.E.S.S. and its symptoms.

Examine the existing studies, patient testimonials, and physician’s notes to learn as much as possible about this disease and its appearance. Thus, you will be prepared if a loved one begins to exhibit symptoms.

Spread knowledge

Do not withhold information from others. The more people who are aware of D.R.E.S.S., the greater the patient’s possibility of receiving timely treatment. Therefore, share your resources, communicate with your loved ones, and inform them about this day.

Engage in D.R.E.S.S.-awareness-raising activities

On this day, some medical organisations and communities host special events. Determine how you can participate or assist. If you cannot locate any D.R.E.S.S.-related events on this day, consider petitioning local communities and medical professionals to host awareness events and talks with the general public.

The medical community classifies D.R.E.S.S. syndrome as ‘rare’ because, according to statistics, it affects between one in one thousand and one in ten thousand individuals.

Although D.R.E.S.S. has occurred more frequently with some pharmaceuticals than with others, there is very little evidence that a particular drug is the cause of this condition.

Originally, the ‘R’ in D.R.E.S.S. stood for ‘rash’ instead of’reaction,’ but this was changed because some cases of D.R.E.S.S. did not involve a rash.

This syndrome can affect both adults and children, males and females of any ethnicity, regardless of age or gender.

D.R.E.S.S. symptoms are delayed, appearing two to eight weeks after the drug has been administered and sometimes persisting even after the medication has been discontinued, in contrast to other allergies and drug-related adverse effects, which typically occur within 24 hours of taking the medication.
