Nursing Assistants Day 2024: Every year, Nursing Assistants Day is observed on June 17. It recognises the commitment of nurses, whose efforts save countless lives. Assisting nurses, nursing assistants assist patients with their daily needs and other healthcare duties. Since 1977, there has been a national day of appreciation for certified nursing assistants, followed by a full week of celebrations. Did you know that the profession of Certified Nursing Assistant began during World War I, when 8,000 nurses were deployed under the Red Cross Programme? Their contributions are still remembered and valued today.
The background of Nursing Assistants Day
Although nurses have existed for centuries, professional nursing is a relatively recent field. Florence Nightingale, a daughter with a solid education, defied convention by becoming a nurse. Nursing was not regarded as a respectable profession for well-bred women, and only family members or close acquaintances were permitted to receive nursing care. This perception was entirely altered by Nightingale. She believed that nursing was an optimal profession for women, who did not have many options at the time.
In 1854, during Britain’s Crimean War, newspapers reported that Russian soldiers were treated significantly better than British soldiers. Nightingale was ordered by the government to transport a party of nurses to the military hospital. Nightingale was able to reduce mortality rates by providing adequate sanitation, ventilation, nourishing food, and medication. She was known as the “lady with the lamp” for her nocturnal visits to the sick and injured.
Her efforts and belief in individuals altered the entire landscape of nursing. By the end of the 19th century, the entire Western world understood the importance of educated nurses. Midway through the 1930s, the demand for patient care grew alongside technological advances. Patients were consequently treated in institutions rather than at home. By the mid-1950s, hospitals were the largest employer of registered nurses.
