International Skinny Dip Day, which is observed on July 8 this year, was a thing long before we began commemorating it. Even notable figures such as Benjamin Franklin, Henry David Thoreau, and Walt Whitman participated at a time when nudity in swimming was considered uncouth and disgraceful. They did not even have a catchy moniker for it back then. The term’skinny dip’ was not first recorded or spoken until 1947. At a party with acquaintances today, no one would react negatively if someone suggested skinny dipping.
The background of International Skinny Dip Day
For years, people have been skinny swimming. As early as 1449, a local Bath newspaper reported that “people were shamelessly removing their swimwear and exposing themselves to onlookers as they entered the water.” Although it was not permissible at the time, some individuals participated. Soon thereafter, it became broadly known that many individuals participated in this activity. Even after artists such as Thomas Eakins and Charles Shannon began portraying nudist swimming scenes in their artwork in 1885 and 1922, the topic was never discussed in common parlance.
There were times when nude swimming was accepted and even encouraged, but the sexual liberation movement of the 1960s put an end to the practise. In the United States and throughout the developed world, the movement challenged traditional conventions of conduct regarding sexuality and interpersonal relationships. A few years later, in the late 1990s, society began to embrace body positivity. All humans are attractive and deserve to be celebrated, regardless of their size, skin colour, or physical impairments.
These immensely revolutionary ideas and movements helped break stereotypes regarding nudity, people who choose to live without clothing, and, of course, those who choose to engage in skinny dipping, whether during the day at a nudist beach or at midnight during intimate moonlit gatherings.
In 2018, the practise of skinny swimming was designated a special day on the calendar. In 2018, the American Association for Nude Recreation hosted the first event for skinny swimming. According to the organisation, the activity and awareness days continue to develop in popularity. Various international organisations compete to organise world-record skinny swim competitions.

INTERNATIONAL SKINNY DIP DAY ACTIVITIES
Attend a skinny swimming event
Naturally, the most common and likely simplest way to celebrate International Skinny Dip Day is to learn about and participate in local skinny dipping events in your area. These events have the potential to be engaging. You can meet new people, make lifelong acquaintances, and possibly even find your soul mate. Even in your pants, do not underestimate the potential of networking while having fun.
Fundraise for charity
If you are already conducting a skinny dipping event, turn it into a charity fundraiser. The Great British Skinny Dip is an excellent illustration of how a group embraces nudism while raising money for causes such as the Heart Foundation. You may host your own or partner with a charity of your choosing.
Discuss nakedness with your peers.
People are triggered by skinny swimming in numerous ways. Nudism should not cause annoyance among those around us. Because nudity, sexuality, and consent are interrelated, it is crucial to have frank, constructive conversations about them. Swimming naked should be enjoyable, and it can be if we create a secure environment.
