The background of National Day of Encouragement

The Encouragement Project was conceived in 2007 by a group of young people at the National Leadership Forum at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. The group then initiated a celebration dubbed the National Day of Encouragement. This was the result of a grim reality — these young people saw a lack of encouragement as one of the primary obstacles that the youth face. They recognised the critical need to assist one another in overcoming adverse influences.

Since the day before September 12 is such a tragic day in American history, National Day of Encouragement was also seen as a day for people across the nation to come together and support one another in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The 12th of September is also observed as a day to commemorate the victims and those who continue to be affected by senseless bigotry.

Belinda LaForce was the first official to issue a proclamation following the establishment of the day. She was the mayor of Searcy at the time. The holiday was recognised on August 22, 2007, and festivities were held on September 12 of the same year. Governor Mike Beebe of Arkansas promptly issued a proclamation declaring September 12 as “State Day of Encouragement.” In 2007, President George W. Bush signed a proclamation declaring the day National Day of Encouragement. On September 13, 2011, Arkansas Senator Mark Pryor introduced a resolution for the Senate’s daily business, which was unanimously approved. National Day of Encouragement is obviously significant for all Americans.
