National Get Gnarly Day affords us the chance to discard outdated notions and embrace novel ones. Unfortunately, we are all aware that the adjective ‘gnarly’ has a negative reputation. Many of us understand ‘gnarly’ to mean ‘bad’ or ‘dangerous’, but it can also indicate ‘exciting’! The term is frequently used by surfers to characterise the unruly waves they ride. On this day, set yourself the challenge of injecting some ferocity into everything you do.
The background of National Get Gnarly Day
Whirlpool Corporation launched a campaign in 2016 to infuse “gNARliness” into their work in order to motivate their employees to achieve their objectives and satisfy their customers. North American Region; “NAR” in “gNARliness” Employees reacted positively to the campaign, so Whirlpool Corporation decided to create National Get Gnarly Day to spread the gnarliness.
The Whirlpool Corporation began with a business failure and the vision of a single family. In 1908, Lou Upton used his savings to launch a business that produced household equipment. However, the company failed to materialise, and as a return on his investment, Upton was permitted to choose something of value from the unsuccessful venture. He selected patents for a handwashing machine he believed could be electrified in the future. In 1911, Upton and his uncle Emory patented a wringer dryer powered by an electric motor. They received funding from Lowell Bassford and assistance from Upton’s sibling Fred to launch Upton Machine Company’s washer. A few years later, World War II suspended washer production, and factories were repurposed to produce aircraft and military equipment components.
In the summer of 1945, the Upton Machine Company resumed manufacturing washers. This period witnessed the company’s meteoric rise from a small manufacturer of washers and ironers to a major manufacturer of major home appliances, including the first completely automatic washer and electric dryer! In recognition of the signature brand, the company’s name was altered to Whirlpool Corporation in 1949. In 1951, for the first time since its founding, the company attained $48 million in sales and $3 million in annual profits.
