National Pancake Day is on February 28, so get yourself a stack of pancakes that will make your mouth water because they are the key ingredient to the perfect breakfast. Since its inception in 2006, IHOP restaurants have raised over $24 million for charitable causes in the communities in which they operate through their annual Spring celebration.
The background of National Pancake Day
This batter-based breakfast item, also known as Johnnycakes, griddle cakes, and hotcakes, dates back more than 30,000 years. It dates back to the Stone Age and was discovered in the stomach of Otzi the Iceman, whose human remains are estimated to be 5,300 years old.
Ancient Greeks and Romans made Alita Dolcia or “another sweet” with wheat flour, olive oil, honey, and curdled milk. Cratinus and Magnes, two Greek poets, wrote about them in their poetry, and Shakespeare mentions them in his renowned plays. During the English Renaissance, spices, rosewater, sherry, and apples were used to flavour pancakes. Pouring batter onto a pan and frying it is a common practise in nearly every culture in the world.
Since 1100 A.D., the British have celebrated Shrove Tuesday. The day before Ash Wednesday, also known as Fat Tuesday in other contexts. This extremely popular Feast Day is observed through confession, the completion of a Lenten sacrifice, and the consumption of pancakes and other sweets.
This year, IHOP will once again celebrate National Pancake Day by offering free short stacks of Buttermilk pancakes to guests from across the nation. Guests will be asked to consider making a donation to designated local charities in exchange for free pancakes. This is your chance to give back to your community while enjoying a delicious meal. Avoid missing out!
