On September 14, we celebrate National Rosa Tequila Day, which is all about experiencing something new and sharing it with friends. This day was initiated by Calirosa, a brand that produces a unique take on traditional tequila that is inspired by the fusion of Mexican craftsmanship and California style.
The unique characteristic of Calirosa tequila is that it is aged in red wine casks, giving it a lovely pink hue. The flagship Rosa Blanco from Calirosa features aromas of strawberry, raspberry, honey, and fresh agave. However, that is only one of their four premium tequilas.
The background of National Rosa Tequila Day
You may assume that rosa tequila is merely artificially coloured or made with a simple infusion, but it’s far more interesting and clever than that. Don Dionisio “Nicho” Real, who in 1942 decided to produce tequila after observing his partners work the agave fields in Amatitán, Jalisco, unintentionally created Rosa tequila. In the 1950s, Nicho’s tequila production had grown to such an extent that he needed to purchase bourbon casks for ageing. When he received red wine barrels by accident one day, he utilised them nonetheless. That’s when he discovered the positive effect the red wine casks had on the colour, aroma, texture, and flavour of his tequila. He chose to be a trailblazer in this completely novel ageing process.
Don Roberto and Don Fernando Real, sons of Nicho, took over the family distillery in 1990 and founded Tequila Selecto. The Real Family of Tequila Selecto has toiled to produce tequila and affirm the identity of the Mexican state of Jalisco for nearly eight decades.
Calirosa, created by Don Roberto and Don Fernando in collaboration with Adam Levine and his wife Behati Prinsloo, carries on the legacy of Nicho’s creation. Levine and Prinsloo fell in love with this concoction and collaborated with the family-owned distillery to introduce the brand to the U.S. and international markets.
