Red Hat Society Day, observed on April 25, is a celebration of women and their lifelong alliances. The Red Hat Society is one of the most prestigious women’s social organisations in the globe. Beginning with a solitary red hat given as a birthday present, it has become a universal symbol for women turning 50 and entering the next stage of their lives. It has evolved from a club or organisation into a women’s society, with members emphasising the positive aspects of life, such as companionship, sisterhood, entertainment, and a wish to find the good in everything. Members foster mutual regard, benevolence, and humour. On this voyage of camaraderie, let us don our red hats.
The background of Red Hat Society Day
The first meeting of The Red Hat Society was conducted on April 25, 1998. It was encouraged that women over the age of 50 join this community. This initiative was conceived by Sue Ellen Cooper, a California resident and the organization’s original founder.
In 1997, for her friend’s birthday, she presented her with a red bowler cap with a bow. Alongside the red bowler, her companion also received a copy of Jenny Joseph’s poem. The opening lines of ‘Warning’ were, “When I am elderly, I will wear purple. A red hat does not look nice on me.” As more of her peers learned about the poem, they began requesting red hats and, later, purple clothing for their birthdays. On April 25, 1998, they had a tea soiree, which was the last time they saw each other. As the organization’s inaugural meeting, this is considered a momentous occasion.
Today’s culture places a premium on female alliances. Previously limited to women over 50 years of age, the group is now open to women of all ages. If you are under the age of 50, you must wear pink headwear with lavender clothing; if you are over 50, you may wear red hats with purple clothing. Red Hat Society members are extremely sociable and take part in a variety of events, including parties, activities, and social engagements.
