Thank You Day is observed annually in the United Kingdom on June 5. In 2021, the holiday was first observed as a means to honour the unsung heroes in local communities who volunteered their time and resources to improve the lives of people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Local communities observe the holiday with barbeque parties, picnics, and tartan tea parties. Thank You Day is recognised by the United Kingdom government and a number of notable individuals, including Lorraine Kelly and Gary Lineker.
The background of Thank You Day
Thank You Day was established to express gratitude to all National Health Service employees and other unsung heroes who served their local communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. By ‘unsung champions,’ we refer to volunteers, council staff, social workers, charities, refuse collectors, and religious leaders who permitted the use of places of worship as vaccination centres. The purpose of this day was to hold a grassroots campaign in local communities, not only as a gesture of gratitude, but also to foster community spirit after many months of national closure. Together Coalition, a small, non-profit organisation dedicated to drawing people together, deserves credit for the campaign. May Parson (the nurse who administered the first COVID-19 vaccine in the United Kingdom) and Debbie Matthew (a stroke survivor) are in the vanguard of this movement.
The campaign was quickly backed by the government, with the Prime Minister committing to host a barbecue “thank you party” for NHS employees and Royal Voluntary Service representatives. Notable individuals, including Gary Lineker, Lorraine Kelly, Michael Sheen, Dame Judi Dench, Raheem Sterling, and Tom Kitchin, have also pledged their participation.
Local communities host tartan tea parties, picnics, and barbecues on Thanksgiving Day.
The spirit of Thank You Day is best encapsulated by Rt. Hon. Robert Jenrick, former U.K. Secretary of State for Housing, Communities, and Local Government: “You are all our community heroes, and on behalf of the U.K. government, I want to say thank you.”
