Celebrate Wear BLUE Day on June 18 by donning a blue attire and discussing the health issues that plague men worldwide. Men live, on average, at least five years less than women. Therefore, it is crucial that men are aware of the health issues that affect them. This is because males avoid health examinations and are generally unaware of the diseases that may claim their lives in a few years. On Wear BLUE Day, however, we intend to reduce the number of diseases affecting men by promoting regular checkups and drawing attention to the health issues men may face.
The background of Wear BLUE Day
Wear BLUE Day is an annual event observed on the third Friday of Men’s Health Month. The month and special day were established by the Men’s Health Network, a non-profit organisation whose mission is to educate the public about the numerous health problems men face. By initiating multiple educational campaigns during the month of June, the organisation intends to alter the male perception of health screenings and checkups. The Men’s Health Network was established in 1992 by a handful of men determined to make a difference by enhancing the quality of life of men. The progenitors include male activists, therapists, and writers who sought to improve the health and wellness of men.
While the entire month of June focuses on raising awareness, Wear BLUE Day focuses on spreading the message through a singular colour. Given how simple it is to observe the day, numerous corporations, workplaces, colleges, and business owners choose to wear blue to bring attention to men’s health issues. The colour represents the diseases that disproportionately affect men, such as testicular cancer, stroke, lung cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, prostate cancer, and a number of others that shorten the life expectancy of the male population. During this day, the hashtag #ShowUsYourBlue is trending on social media platforms, highlighting the efforts of thousands of Americans to effect positive social change.
