World Outlander Day is annually observed on June 1. It is dedicated to the long-running historical drama television series “Outlander,” which is based on Diana Gabaldon’s ongoing novel series of the same name. Claire Randall, played by Caitriona Balfe, is a married former World War II military nurse who is transported to the 18th century, falls in love with and marries a Highland warrior, Jamie Fraser, of a fictionalised version of Clan Fraser of Lovat, during the Jacobite rising of 1745. The series debuted in August of 2014. There are presently six seasons and a seventh has been ordered.
The background of World Outlander Day
The story of “Outlander” began with the publication of Diana Gabaldon’s historical fantasy novel series of the same name. In the late 1980s, Gabaldon began writing the first volume of the series, and it was published in 1991. The author has planned a total of ten volumes, of which nine have been completed. Similar to the television series, the book series is centred on the time-traveling romance and exploits of wartime nurse Claire Randall and Highland warrior Jaime Fraser after she is transported to 18th-century Scotland.
Time travel has long been a recurring motif in fiction. It gained prominence in the late 19th century. These stories explore the experience and repercussions of travelling through time, whether in the past or the future. The 1843 publication of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” is an example of such a story. It features Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly and hapless protagonist who is shown the consequences of his greed and lack of benevolence. The novel “The Time Machine” by H. G. Wells, published in 1895, is the genesis of the science-fiction-oriented conception of time travel.
“Outlander” premiered in August 2014, with Caitriona Balfe as protagonist Claire Randall and Sam Heughan as protagonist Jamie Fraser. There are presently six seasons of the show, and a seventh has been ordered. Numerous awards have been nominated for and won by the series and its collaborators, including the People’s Choice Awards, Saturn Awards, BAFTA Scotland Awards, and others.
