World Sauntering Day, observed annually on June 19, may appear to be a pointless celebration. Nonetheless, it is one of those days that has the potential to alter how we function and live our lives. The reality is that we live in a fast-paced, technologically advanced world where people who refuse to keep up have no place. Consequently, many of us get lost in the chaotic world and end up jeopardising our mental serenity. World Sauntering Day, on the other hand, encourages us to pause, take a long breath, and learn to appreciate life.
The background of World Sauntering Day
Before we delve into the history of the holiday, let’s examine the definition of sauntering. According to the definition provided by the Oxford Dictionary, to meander is to walk slowly and leisurely, as if one has all the time in the world. The French coined the term “saunter,” which is derived from the phrase “Saint-Terre.”
In the 1970s, World Sauntering Day was created to honour this concept. W.T. Rabe, a publicist who worked at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, conceived the concept for the event. Why, you ask? To combat the jogging craze that had swept the United States.
Rabe’s mission was to promote slowing down and observing the world around us, despite the health benefits of jogging. Yes, jogging may give us a runner’s high, but it is a fast-paced exercise, whereas simply relaxing and observing the world has its own benefits. According to Rabe’s son, the purpose of sauntering is to wander aimlessly from A to B without regard for logistics. It signifies, “You don’t care where you’re going or how you’re getting there.” The key to the ideal amble is to drift aimlessly and pay attention to the world around you.
