Florida Curriculum Drama Sparks Judge’s Sharp Response to Teachers Union: Two recent attempts by Florida’s teacher unions to stop the state’s innovative educational reforms have failed. This week, Vice President Kamala Harris and Teachers Union Leader Randi Weingarten unsuccessfully attempted to discredit the state’s new social studies standards.
This summer, however, the unions suffered an even greater curriculum setback as a result of the state’s new openness rule for online curriculum. This year, the Florida Education Association (FEA), the state’s teachers union, filed a petition to halt the implementation of the state’s online curriculum transparency law for 2022.

Following a well-trodden script, the union argued that the cost of enforcing the curriculum openness law was unjustifiable. Last month, the judge in charge of the case determined that the union’s arguments were nothing more than “hot air and hysteria.” The judge made the following remarks:
In a nutshell, only union opposition prevents public schools from disseminating online disclosures of what they present to students. The state’s education commissioner, Manny Diaz Jr., put it succinctly: “It’s sad to see the Florida teachers’ union waste their members’ hard-earned money on a frivolous lawsuit to block parents from knowing what their children are reading in classrooms.”
With the passage of legislation promoting online curriculum accessibility, Florida has assumed a national leadership position. Now, it is up to Florida and other states to implement the full provisions of the Academic Transparency Act to ensure that all supplementary material presented to students, such as the 1619 Project and other politically activist articles and videos, is disclosed to parents and the public online.
