James Ray III Cause of Death: James Ray III, a 60-year-old lawyer from New Jersey, died while waiting to be sentenced for killing his girlfriend Angela Bledsoe in 2018. When University Hospital in Newark found Ray unresponsive in his cell, they called for help and pronounced him dead.
Bledsoe was about to leave their home in Montclair when Ray shot her. He said it was in self-defense. In May 2023, he was found guilty of first-degree murder and weapons charges. He was given a 30–life term in prison. When Ray got back to the United States in November 2018, his short time as a criminal was over. He had been trying to get away to Cuba and Mexico.
Ray was in the Marines and was a police officer in New York City. His defense team has called the horrible end to their client’s life a “tragic ending to a tragic story.”

What did James Ray III get found guilty of?
Ray was found guilty of killing 44-year-old Bledsoe in their Upper Montclair home in 2018. He was 55 years old at the time. NorthJersey.com says the decision was made public on Friday, May 12, 2023, after a six-week hearing.
On October 23, 2018, Bledsoe’s dead body was found in the couple’s kitchen by Montclair cops. Michelle Miller, who spoke for the state, said, “There was blood all over the place.”
The news source goes on to say, “Bledsoe was shot in the chest in the living room. She then stumbled to the kitchen, where Ray shot her in the back and face.”
Defense attorney Brooke Barnett said that Bledsoe had pulled a gun on Ray and was threatening him. Miller, on the other hand, said that the murder scene had been “staged.”
“There would have been blood all over that gun if Angela had had it in her hand,” she said. That gun wasn’t dropped, kicked, or slid; it was put there.
