Social Security Benefits Rise in 2027: Retired Americans are set to get a 3.6% increase in their Social Security benefits in 2027. But workers who stay with the same employer are seeing slower wage growth, raising questions about how people are keeping up with rising living costs.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced the increase on October 14. Around 72 million Social Security beneficiaries will receive the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) from January 2027. According to the SSA, the average retirement payment will rise by about $75 per month.
How Much Will Social Security Payments Increase in 2027?
The COLA is an annual increase designed to help Social Security payments keep up with inflation. The SSA calculates it using changes in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W).

The new increase will affect nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries from January 2027. Around 7.3 million people receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will get their increased payments starting December 31, 2026. Some people receive both benefits, bringing the total number of people affected to around 76 million.
The increase comes as living costs remain high. In September 2026, the Consumer Price Index rose by 3.7% compared with the same month last year. This was above the Federal Reserve’s 2% inflation target, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The 2027 increase is lower than the 8.7% COLA announced in 2022 for 2023, when inflation was much higher following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Workers Who Stay in Their Jobs sre Getting Smaller Pay Increases
Wage growth for employees has followed a different pattern. The Atlanta Federal Reserve’s September data showed that the three-month average wage growth for workers who stayed with the same employer was 3.4%. This was below the 3.6% Social Security increase.
Workers who changed jobs saw stronger wage growth of 4.7%. The figures suggest that switching employers can sometimes bring a bigger pay increase, but it doesn’t guarantee everyone will earn more.
Finding a new job has also become difficult in some industries. Hiring remains limited and some white-collar sectors have reported job losses. Leisure and hospitality employment has also seen ups and downs.
Social Security 2027 COLA: Check the New Increase and Payment Dates
Wage increases depend on factors such as an employee’s skills, industry and demand for their work. Social Security’s COLA, by contrast, follows a government formula linked to consumer prices. This means retirees and workers may see different changes in their income even when both face the same rising costs.
SSA is Also Correcting Millions of Social Security Records
Alongside the COLA announcement, the SSA is working to improve the accuracy of its Social Security number database. In an update published on October 20, the agency said it had corrected nearly 15% of active Social Security numbers.
The work includes adding 17 million missing dates of death and updating around 25 million records that lacked citizenship information. The agency is also working to correct another 8.5 million records with inaccurate citizenship details.
Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said, “Accurate SSN records prevent fraud across federal programs and support the proper administration of benefits,” according to the SSA.
The record cleanup is meant to improve the accuracy of government information. It doesn’t mean people’s Social Security numbers are automatically being taken away or that their monthly benefits will automatically change.
