McDonald’s to Stop Self-Serve Beverage Station in US by 2023

This change is intended to create a consistent experience for customers and personnel across all ordering points.

McDonald’s to Stop Self-Serve Beverage Station: Similar to a discontinued product, self-service soda dispensers in McDonald’s restaurants will no longer exist in ten years.

McDonald’s announced that the gradual transition away from beverage stations in dining rooms across the nation will be completed by 2032. At the counter, customers will be required to request refills.

This change is intended to create a consistent experience for customers and personnel across all ordering points, including McDelivery, the app, the kiosk, the drive-thru, and the restaurant, the company told USA TODAY in a statement.

The fast-food chain did not specify whether the decision was influenced by financial or health considerations.

Several franchises in Illinois have already made the transition, according to State Journal-Register, a USA TODAY network affiliate. The decision was influenced by food safety, theft prevention, and a paucity of dine-in customers, according to store owners.

Mikel Petro, who operates 15 McDonald’s locations in central Illinois with his wife and in-laws, stated, “It’s an evolution towards convenience and a result of the growth of digital service.”

According to the State Journal-Register, Brad Davis, who owns numerous McDonald’s in Springfield, Illinois, stated that one of his restaurants was chosen to implement the new “crew pour” system, in which employees refill customers’ drinks for them. He told the publication that while the experience was an adjustment for both customers and employees, there have been few complaints.

According to Insider, self-service soda dispensers have also been removed in the west, including in Orange, California.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, McDonald’s is one of many fast-food restaurants that have witnessed a decline in customers dining in restaurants and an increase in digital takeaway orders.Yum! Brands Inc., the parent company of Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut, has hinted at a possible transition to exclusively digital sales.
