Subsequently, the blue category was completed expeditiously, as I promptly recognized the brilliant phonetic combination linking Phat, Phew, Philly, and Phish. However, I must confess that I was unaware until after submitting my response that those terms were also functional when starting with an F.
Now that I was rolling, I was kind of into the idea of merging Great and Perfect, but then Hero, Icon, and Legend said that Great ought to be paired with an all-timer instead.
Hence, three out of three with just the final four words from the purple group. Elevator, Fever, Perfect, and Sales took me a while to connect, but I did ultimately discover the pattern before finishing the game and feeling like the Connections GOAT. Pitch flawless, indeed!

I moved to try my luck elsewhere, reasoning that Dice might have been the missing pick even though there was no clear weak point in my initial selection. Melt, Shred, Grate, and Crumble read like directions straight out of my favorite cookbook. But once more, I was alone.
Fortunately, I quickly snapped out of my funk when I saw an entrancing substitute, earning my first category of the day with Charm, Curse, Hex, and Spell – an enchanted concoction, I’m sure you’ll agree, albeit one that doesn’t address my previous conundrums.
I went back to what I’ll call my cookbook combo, taking out Grate and adding Slice in its stead. I smiled cheesily as the chosen words performed their little dance of finishing the category.
This is because, after removing Grate from the purple category image, I connected it with Log and Flue instead, which made me think of those recent, roaring Christmas fires. What else, though, could compare? Why, none other than our good pal Poker!

The ability to draw connections depends more on your general knowledge and logical reasoning than it does on your ability to identify which word or words don’t belong in your hypothesized groupings. The game will only alert you if there is even a single wrong word in your selection.
You should take your time studying all 16 words before forming your initial guess if you want to win Connections. Exist any words with meanings beyond pronunciation? Are there any words that have several meanings? Which terms are included in longer phrases?
Frequently, the first response that comes to mind will purposefully mislead you. Determining any potential 5-word groups is therefore a smart place to start. You should be able to determine which of the five words fits in a separate category by bookmarking them and returning to them once you’ve solved one or more more categories.

NYT Connections: What Is It?
On June 12, 2023, Connections, a category-matching game, went live in beta. On August 28, 2023, it then formally joined the NYT Games app for iOS and Android devices. Using this app, users can play the daily New York Times Crossword and the wildly popular game Wordle; crossword access requires a premium subscription, but Wordle and Connections are free to play.
